Jeff Daniels Is Serious About Songwriting

Jeff Daniels is not William Shatner.

Whether you know the actor as maverick newsman Will McAvoy on HBO’s “The Newsroom” or as kindhearted imbecile Harry Dunne in the “Dumb and Dumber” films, that fact should be obvious enough.

Still, when Daniels steps on a stage with an acoustic guitar, he can sometimes feel that comparison to Captain Kirk looming behind him. Depending on your tastes, Shatner’s bizarre 1968 album “The Transformed Man” might make a strong argument that actors shouldn’t try their hand at music.

“You’ve got to be able to overcome that,” Daniels tells The Tennessean from his home in Michigan. “Because people go, ‘Stay in your lane. Be an actor, don’t come down here.’ But if you’ve got the material, if you’ve got the songs, if you’ve got the musicianship that you’ve spent decades working on, then I think it’s worth a night (for an audience.)”
